A PRICE YOU CAN PUT IN PERSPECTIVE

What could a year of cigarettes cost in the US?

At a hypothetical price of $10 for 20 cigarettes, a pack a day adds up to $3,650 over 365 days. Your receipt gives you a better starting point than a national average.

Use what you actually pay.

Take the price of a pack from a recent receipt, count the cigarettes in that pack and estimate how many you smoke per day. The yearly figure is the price of one cigarette multiplied by your daily average, then by 365.

If a pack contains 20 cigarettes and costs $10, each cigarette costs $0.50. At 10 cigarettes a day that is $5 daily and $1,825 a year. At 20 a day, it becomes $10 daily and $3,650 a year. The same calculation works for a different pack size.

Yearly cost = pack price ÷ cigarettes per pack × cigarettes per day × 365

Illustrative spending with a $10 pack of 20 cigarettes (USD)
Cigarettes per dayOver 30 daysOver 365 days
5$75.00$912.50
10$150.00$1,825.00
20 (one pack)$300.00$3,650.00

Make the estimate yours.

  1. Select USD in the smoking cost calculator. Currency is a label; it does not convert a price from another currency.
  2. Enter your actual price and pack size, then your daily average. If you do not smoke every day, use a weekly total divided by seven.
  3. Compare the daily, 30-day and yearly totals. A 30-day estimate is not an average calendar month; a full year here always means 365 days.

Spending avoided is not a bank-balance forecast.

The examples keep the price and smoking amount constant. They exclude future price changes, inflation, interest, treatment costs and anything else you might buy. If your smoking or the price changes, update the inputs rather than extending an old estimate indefinitely.

After quitting, the cigarette purchases you no longer make are a useful reference point. Money actually saved also depends on your other spending. You could set aside a chosen amount each week for something important to you, without treating this estimate as guaranteed cash.
